CARMEL GUNNING - Tin Whistle

Carmel Gunning, chanteuse et joueuse de whistle, originaire de Sligo en Irlande, est issue d'une famille de musiciens, chanteurs et danseurs. Dès l'âge de sept ans, elle est encouragée par ses parents qui reconnaissent ses rares talents de musicienne et de chanteuse. Championne d'Irlande de Slow Airs et une championne Scor d'Irlande en musique instrumentale, elle a développé son propre style.

Elle travaille professionnellement depuis 1969, époque où elle a formé son premier groupe pour jouer pour les danseurs dans l'ouest de l'Irlande. Depuis 1976, elle a formé de nombreux étudiants en Irlande, en Angleterre, en Europe, en Australie et aux États-Unis, dont beaucoup sont devenus de grands musiciens. Elle a joué avec Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann en Angleterre et en Irlande et aux États-Unis avec le groupe traditionnel anglais The London Lassies.

Pour marquer ses 50 ans dans l'industrie de la musique cette année, elle s'est mise à travailler sur quatre projets musicaux. Deux des projets sont terminés, à savoir un livre de 64 compositions originales intitulé "The Sligo Maid" et son sixième CD intitulé "Cathair Shligigh". Elle travaille sur les deux autres projets - un recueil de chansons collectées au fil des ans et un CD de chant traditionnel..
Son école de musique fonctionne d'octobre à juin.  Elle anime également sa propre université d'été chaque année en août. L'année dernière, des élèves de Channel Isles, d'Angleterre, d'Écosse et d'Irlande ont suivi des cours de tin whistle, de flûte, de chant traditionnel et de théorie de la musique. Au fil des ans, elle a été invité à des festivals partout dans le monde à la fois pour enseigner et jouer. Elle est également apparue à la télévision en Irlande, en Angleterre, aux États-Unis et en Australie et ses CD ont été passés à la radio dans des programmes consacrés à la musique irlandaise à travers le monde.


Carmel Gunning, a tin whistle player/Singer from Sligo, Ireland comes from a family of musicians, singers and dancers. From the age of seven, she was nurtured by her parents who recognized her rare talents as a musician and singer. She is an All-Ireland Champion in Slow Airs and All-Ireland Scor Champion in instrumental music and has developed her own personal style.

She has been working professionally since 1969 where she formed her first band playing for dances in many parts of the west of Ireland.
From 1976, she has taught very many students in Ireland, England, Europe, Australia and America, many of whom have become top-class musicians.
Carmel has performed with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann in England and Ireland and in America with the English traditional band The London Lassies.

To mark 50 years in the music business this year she set out to work on four musical projects. Two of the projects are finished namely, a book of her own 64 original compositions called 'The Sligo Maid' and her sixth solo CD called 'Cathair Shligigh'. She is working on the other two projects - a collection of songs collected over the years and a traditional singing CD. She runs her own summer school annually in August and last year students from The Channel Isles, England, Scotland and Ireland attended classes in tin whistle, flute, traditional singing and music theory.

Her school of music runs yearly from October to June. Down through the years she has travelled to festivals worldwide teaching and performing. She has also appeared on TV in Ireland,  England, America and Australia and her CDs have been featured on irish music radio programmes all over the world.

GERRY O'CONNOR - Violon

Gerry O'Connor est originaire de Dundalk, dans le comté de Louth en Irlande, d'une famille où on est violoniste depuis quatre générations. Ses enregistrements sont fortement axés sur la musique régionale et son travail en tant que soliste et membre du groupe Lá Lugh et de Skylark est bien connu dans le monde entier. Au cours des deux dernières décennies, il a enregistré et joué avec tous les principaux interprètes du monde de la musique irlandaise, notamment avec des membres des Chieftains, les Boys of the Lough, Planxty, De Dannan et Bothy Band. Son album solo Journeyman a été salué comme l'un des albums les plus importants du violon irlandais. Gerry est également luthier, professeur de musique et producteur.

Gerry O’Connor hails from Dundalk, in County Louth, Ireland and is the product of four generations of fiddle players. His past recordings have focused strongly on local music and his work as a soloist and as a band member of Lá Lugh and Skylark is well known across the world. ATELIER DE VIOLON avec GERRY O'CONNOR

• Les coups d'archets typiques dans la musique irlandaise spécifiques à la musique de danse.

• Ce cours s'adresse aux joueurs de violon de niveau intermédiaire.

• Une certaine expérience dans l'apprentissage à l'oreille serait un avantage ; une approche positive pour essayer d'apprendre en regardant et en écoutant est essentielle.

  

L'articulation des coups d'archet pour les jigs et autres rythmes de danse typiques introduits au début de la classe fourniront la base d'une approche systématique applicable au jeu de violon dans la musique irlandaise, adapté à ce niveau d'expérience.

Cela permettra à l’élève d’identifier des techniques d'archet répétitifs qui, bien que non spécifiques, l’aideront à comprendre la pratique codifiée de l’archet dans le jeu de violon irlandais.

L'enregistrement audio et vidéo est encouragé. Les indications des motifs d'archet typiques pour les airs étudiés pendant l'atelier seront transmises par courrier électronique après les cours.


Dans cet atelier, l’objectif ne sera pas simplement d’apprendre de nouveaux airs, mais d’améliorer sa technique de jeu et de prendre plaisir à jouer du violon.

FIDDLE WORKSHOP with GERRY O’CONNOR

• Some Typical Bowing Patterns in Irish Music specific to the playing of Dance music.
• This class is offered to students of an intermediate level of fiddle playing.
• Some experience in learning by ear would be an advantage; a positive approach to attempting to learn by watching and listening is essential

The bowing and articulation of bow patterns in the playing of jigs and other familiar dance rhythms introduced in the early part of the class will provide the basis for a systematic approach to a generic playing of Irish fiddle music suitable for this level of experience.This will enable the student to identify some repetitive patterns of bowing which, although non specific, will aid the student in understanding the non- random activity of fiddle bow activity in Irish fiddle playing.
Audio and selective video recording is encouraged. The notation of the workshop tunes with some typical bowing motifs indicated will be forwarded by email after the class

The focus in this class will be not just to learn more tunes but to improve the ability to play and enjoy the experience of playing the fiddle.

GILLES LE BIGOT - Guitare DADGAD

Le guitariste Gilles Le Bigot, est surtout connu en Bretagne en tant que co-fondateur des groupes Skolvan et Barzaz. Depuis le début des années 1980, son travail de guitariste et de compositeur se caractérise par le style «open tuning». Gilles a enregistré et joué avec Lá Lugh au cours des années 1990 et a depuis continué à travailler avec Gerry O'Connor, enregistrant un album en duo avec lui en 2006. En plus de collaborer à plusieurs enregistrements majeurs tels que «l'Héritage des Celtes» de Dan Ar Braz et «Azéliziza» de Le Bagad Kemper, il a également enregistré et s'est produit avec Kornog, Slovan, Barzaz, Fiddle Rendezvous et son propre trio, Empreintes, avec Jean Michel Veillon et Marthe Vassalo.


Guitarist Gilles Le Bigot, is best known in Brittany as the co-founder of the groups Skolvan and Barzaz. Since the early 1980's his work as guitar-player and composer is characterized by the” open-tuning” style. Gilles recorded and performed with Lá Lugh throughout the 1990s and has continued to work with Gerry O’Connor since that time recording a duo album with him in 2006. As well as collaborating on several major recordings such as ” l’Héritage des Celtes” by Dan Ar Braz , and “Azéliziza ” by Le Bagad Kemper, he has performed and recorded with Kornog, Slovan, Barzaz, Fiddle Rendezvous and his own trio line-up, Empreintes with Jean Michel Veillon and Marthe Vassalo.

ATELIER DE GUITARE DADGAD avec GILLES LE BIGOT

(Enseignement en français et anglais)

Cet atelier est avant tout une occasion de plaisir et de détente - plaisir de se réunir pour apprendre de nouvelles chansons et techniques, aux rythme et niveau de chacun.

Mon rôle est de répondre au mieux à vos attentes dans ce monde musical qui est le mien et de veiller à ce que vous partiez avec beaucoup de nouvelles idées à creuser.

Niveau requis : Au moins 2-3 ans d'expérience en accordage standard. Dans cet atelier, différents niveaux sont possibles en alternant travail individuel et travail de groupe

Sujets abordés : Etude de l’accord ouvert : La guitare étant accordée DADGAD, nous travaillerons sur différentes positions d’accord, approches d’accompagnement et techniques de guitare appropriés.

Répertoire : musique celtique

Techniques présentées : Travailler à la fois avec le médiator et les doigts dans une variété de chansons et d’accompagnements. Des exercices adaptés sont proposés pour les deux techniques.

Rythme : Examen de différents rythmes de la main droite dans l'accompagnement de la musique de danse, ainsi que des exercices pertinents dans ces rythmes.

Harmonie : l'objectif est de fournir quelques approches pour l'harmonisation des mélodies et ceci sera illustré à l'aide d'exemples spécifiques d'accompagnements dans la musique bretonne et irlandaise.

Matériel : De quoi enregistrer des parties de l'atelier. Pour les partitions nous utiliserons la tablature. Apportez un médiator et un capo.

GUITAR WORKSHOP with GILLES LE BIGOT

(This will be given in French and Engish)

This workshop is above all an occasion for pleasure and relaxation– pleasure to come together to learn new songs and techniques, each at one’s own pace and level.

My role is to best meet your expectations as you enter into my musical world, and to ensure that you leave with lots of new ideas to explore.

Level required: At least 2-3 years of experience in standard tuning. In this workshop different levels are made possible by alternating group with individual work.

TOPICS: Study of open tuning: The guitar being tuned DADGAD, we will work on different chording positions, accompaniment approaches and appropriate guitar works.

Repertoire: Celtic music

Techniques discussed: Working with both pick and fingers through a variety of songs and accompaniments. Appropriate exercises are offered in both techniques.

Rhythm: A look at different right hand rhythms in the accompaniment of dance music, along with relevant exercises in these rhythms.

Harmony: The goal is to provide some approaches to the harmonizing of melodies, and will be illustrated with specific examples of accompaniments in Breton and Irish music.

Material: Something to record portions of the workshop. Scoring will be in tablature.
Bring a pick and a capo.

MARTIN O'HARE - Bodhrán

Martin O'Hare est connu pour son style de jeu distinctif et sa capacité à donner une impulsion supplémentaire à la musique et aux musiciens avec lesquels il joue. Il a été membre des groupes Ash Plant, Trad Lads et Lá Lugh et a également joué dans Riverdance The Show, Mairtin O'Connor et le Chatterbox Band, ainsi en tant qu'accompagnateur d'artistes tels que Emmy Lou Harris, Mary Bergin, Tony MacMahon et Gerry O'Connor, Mairtin O'Connor, Desi Wilkinson, Ronan Browne et Tim O'Brien avec "The Crossing".

Son intérêt pour le bódhrán est né après avoir appris divers autres instruments de musique irlandaise alors qu'il grandissait à Belfast et à Newcastle Co. Down. Très inspiré par Johnny McDonagh et Planxty, il commence son propre voyage à la découverte de la musique irlandaise à travers le bodhrán et développe son propre style. Il a découvert que le bodhrán est un instrument qui permet au joueur de s'exprimer personnellement et avec beaucoup de créativité. Le joueur peut influencer et se laisser influencer par ceux avec qui il joue dans le moment présent et le bodhrán devient cet épice et ce zeste supplémentaires dans la musique qui en font un jeu fascinant à écouter et à jouer.

His interest in the bodhrán arose after learning various other instruments in irish music while growing up in Belfast and Newcastle Co. Down. Very much inspired by Johnny McDonagh and Planxty he began his own journey exploring Irish music through the bodhrán and developed his own unique style. He found the bodhrán an instrument that allows the player vast space for individuality and creativity. You can influence and let yourself be influenced by who you are playing with in the moment and the bodhrán becomes that extra spice and zest in the music that makes it so fascinating to listen to and play.

PATRICK PALLU - Danses (Sets et Ceilis)

Patrick, français du Nord, pratique et enseigne les danses irlandaises dans notre Sud depuis bientôt 20 ans. Il animera l'atelier Danses, à la fois Sets et Ceilis. 

Patrick a découvert la danse irlandaise début 2000 auprès de Patrick McCionnaith (de l'association Arpalhands-Toulouse) et a très vite intégré son groupe de démonstration (St Patrick à Bilbao, Festival Celtique de St Cirq). Il a voulu transmettre ce qu'il apprenait et a mis en place un atelier à Tarbes dès 2001.

Il a nourri son répertoire à travers différents stages avec des formateurs irlandais, et aussi dans les rencontres avec d'autres ateliers (Toulouse, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Strasbourg…).

Aujourd'hui des groupes de musique irlandaise (Doolin, Real Ladies, Rosin the Bow…) et des associations font appel à lui pour animer des bals (Celtival de Tarbes, St Patrick Montberon, St Patrick Aureilhan, Festival Celtique Uzech…), et des stages de danses.

Il anime à Tarbes, au sein de l'Association des Celtes de Bigorre, des ateliers hebdomadaires et des rencontres mensuelles.
